INSPECTION

Cranky_edited.jpg

NDT

On receiving a used crankshaft, an initial inspection is carried out. This includes non-destructive tests such as ultrasonic, magnetic particle and liquid penetrant. A dimensional inspection is carried out where diameters, straightness, half stroke and angularities are checked. A hardness survey will also be conducted. All this will be analysed to determine a salvage procedure. Chrome plating or metal spray build ups are available via our approved sub-contractors if required.

Manual inspection of the products includes:

Ultrasonic

Dye Penetrant

Magnetic particle flaw detection

100% Visual checks

100%-Dimensional inspection to customer drawing

Document Material Pack including Material Test Certificate

Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) of crankshafts is a critical process in ensuring the integrity and reliability of these high-stress components. Crankshafts operate under extreme loads and rotational forces, making them susceptible to fatigue cracks, surface defects, and internal flaws. NDT methods such as Magnetic Particle Inspection (MPI), Ultrasonic Testing (UT), and Dye Penetrant Inspection (DPI) are commonly employed to detect cracks, inclusions, and discontinuities without causing damage to the part. MPI is particularly effective for identifying surface and near-surface cracks in ferromagnetic materials, while UT is used to locate internal defects by transmitting high-frequency sound waves through the component. These techniques help prevent catastrophic engine failures, extend service life, and maintain compliance with stringent industry standards.
